Being in education can be expensive. You’ve got food, accommodation and supplies to pay for so some extra money is always welcomed. But what can you do? Especially with the current events, working from home has become increasingly popular and it can sometimes make finding work easier. If you’re looking to work from home as a student, then here are some jobs you might be interested in:

Freelancing

Freelancing is one of the most well-known ways of working from home. People have been freelancing for years and it’s becoming even more popular at the moment. If you decide to pursue freelancing, you should try for an area that relates to your dream role. Gaining experience in the right area is one of the most helpful things you can do. Here are some freelance roles that might be perfect for you:

Writer

Writing can be a broad role in itself. It’s one of the most useful skills especially as a freelancer, because almost everything needs some writing along with it. You could write blog posts, articles, social media posts, product descriptions and much more. If you’re studying a subject like English, then this is perfect for you. It’s a great way to show you’ve perfected the skill and you can even create a portfolio from the work you do. Like many roles, how much you earn can range a lot, especially because some writers get paid by word count or paid by each post. It’s a good idea to do specific research into the types of posts you’re creating before you set your price.

Programming

Not everybody knows how to programme, so if you do, use it to your advantage. There is no online website that works without code and that’s why there are so many people and businesses who need programmers to assist them. It’s a very useful skill to have, so it’s worth working on if you’re interested. How much you charge can really range for a programmer. Some people ask for £30-£40 an hour, but these are usually those with lots of experience. £10-£20 an hour is a great starting point and you can always higher your prices!

Translator

If you know an additional language you’ve already got great skill. Why not put that skill to use and earn some money? You can use a few roles a second language for with teaching being the obvious choice, but translating is also a great way to use it. Many people need work translating when they’re working with people internationally, so they’re constantly seeking people to help. This is your opportunity to step up! Let the client know you’re well clued up and hopefully, they’ll give you the chance to show what you’ve got. £20-£30 an hour seems like the average rate for a freelance translator, but this can vary with each company.

Graphics Design

In a lot of roles such as marketing, social media and art as a subject, being creative is vital. By getting a graphic design role on the side you can prove you’ve got an eye for that creativity. If you’re studying art, you might also find you enjoy the role too, so it’s not a bad way to make some extra cash. It’s good to get a few mock-ups first to show what you’re capable of and save anything you create in a portfolio. You never know when it might come in handy!

How you freelance is up to you. The main reason so many people like it is because it’s mainly on your terms so you can make that decision. For example, if you wanted to write articles, you might send ideas to big companies, or you could join a freelance platform. Upwork and Fiverr are just two of the most popular ones to use and they’re all looking for people in these roles. Depending on the job role you can also find specific websites to those areas. Set up your profile and get working!

Online tutor

Freelancing isn’t the only way to go. Being at college is always impressive and it’s even more impressive to those who hope to be there someday. If you’re confident in your subject knowledge and want to earn a bit of extra money, you could always become an online tutor! Especially if you’re doing subjects like maths, English or science that are studied at all levels, there will be plenty of students that need your help. You could even tutor someone in the early years of college as they’re probably doing topics you’ve studied yourself.

This job is particularly great if teaching is a possible career for you, but even if not, there are many great skills to achieve from doing this for your CV. As a tutor, you can charge around £10-£20 an hour which isn’t bad at all. So how do you find people who need your help? You could always start with people you know or try posting on social media to advertise. Besides that, there are also websites such as MyTutor and TutorChoice to help you out. It’s a great opportunity and can be super easy as long as you’re confident in yourself!

Online surveys

Although it’s not technically a job, it’s a very popular way to make money among students. Websites such as LifePoints and Swagbucks are two of the places that will pay students for entering their surveys. You don’t make a lot per survey, it’s usually around £1-£3, but they don’t take long to complete either. That being said, you are usually limited to how many you can take a day. If you have spare time between classes these are great to do and at the end of the day who’s going to say no to a couple of extra pounds? It’s a super-easy way to make money and not one to be missed!
