Frequently Asked Questions

Applying to be a Freelance Writer with Ivory Research

How can I apply for a job as a Writer?

We ask for you to complete our online application form. Our form should take only 10-20 minutes to complete. We do ask that you attach your CV, UK degree certificate and at least 2 examples of your work so that we are able to assess your writing skills.

What qualifications do I need?

We require our writers to hold a minimum of a 2:1 degree obtained from a UK University. The degree can be in any discipline.

In addition to your degree, we also require our writers to have a good command of the English language with outstanding grammar and excellent writing skills. You must also have:

  • Problem solving skills
  • A high level of knowledge in one or more discipline
  • A strong desire to improve your skills, knowledge and foster personal development
  • Work well under pressure
  • Exceptional customer focus

How much do you pay?

Our rates vary according to word count, assignment complexity and the standard required. We pay up to 100 pounds per 1,000 words and sometimes more. There are also occasions where we ask the writer to name their fee.

How will I be paid?

We pay using Internet Banking. Please note our preferred method of payment is into a UK bank account. We will consider other payment options such a PayPal and International Bank Transfer; however the additional costs involved with these methods will need to be borne by the writer.

How often do you pay?

We pay twice a month – at the middle and end of each month. We have a bookkeeper who will process your invoice, which will be sent by email. This invoice will contain details of all the work you have completed in the two week period in between payments.

What kind of work will I be offered?

The work we offer is writing and research. They may include reports, essays, dissertations and proposals. See our full service portfolio.

How long will I need to wait to hear if I am successful or not?

Once we have received your application with your CV and examples of work, you can expect to hear from us within 24 – 48 hours. Please note this may be slightly longer for UK Bank Holiday weekends and during peak periods.

What is the application procedure?

Once your initial application has been approved, you will be invited to participate in a telephone interview. Upon this being successful, we will send you some documents to read and sign. They will include a Services Agreement, a copy of our Compulsory Writing and Presentation Standards. When these documents have been received, you may be set a trial assignment to analyse and assess the quality of your work. If you successfully pass the trial assignment, we will confirm your details and add you to our database of writers.

Do you need to see proof of my degree certificate?

Yes we will. You will be asked to provide this when you apply online and will need to supply this before we call you for your telephone interview.

Do you only accept self-employed writers?

Yes we do. If you are not already self-employed, it is a very simple process to do. If you would further help and advice about becoming self-employed, there are many websites which can offer you details for free. You may also want an objective point of view from an organisation such as The Citizens Advice Bureau (for UK residents).

Am I obliged to accept every piece of work you offer me?

No. You can accept as many or as few orders as you like. All we ask is that if you do reject an assignment we offer you, to let us know your reason why and respond within 12 hours of the order being offered to you. This will enable us to keep a record if it is a particular area of a topic you do not wish to write on or if you do not want to accept assignments with short deadlines (as we can always ask the client if he/she is able to extend their deadline).

In the first instance, our rates of pay are much higher than many other companies within this industry.
