Being a student in 2016 Vs 2017 in Italy
With its rich and colourful history, notable inventors and one of the world’s oldest universities, Italy is a popular choice for university students. Over the years, the Italian government has made various changes to Italian educational policy with the aim of competing favorably with European counterparts. In the latest 2016 rankings of top universities in Europe, Italy is the third highest and further improvements have been planned to drive up standards even higher. These changes will have a direct impact on students, enhancing their learning experience and improving the quality of the degree qualification that they obtain.
Residents and work permits
Since 2007, residents permit and work permits have been replaced with declaration of presence and permits to stay. Anyone planning to stay in Italy for more than 90 days is regarded as a resident. International students are expected to apply for declaration of presence and permits to stay within eight days of their arrival.

Tuition fees, scholarships and Grants
Unlike some EU countries like Denmark and Austria where EU students are exempt from paying tuition fees, every student planning to study in Italy should be prepared to pay for their tuition fees. Tuition fees remain very much the same, with public universities being regulated by the government and charging their fees in accordance with the program of study that you take.
Various scholarships have been put in place to ease the cost of study for students. These governments are offered to all eligible students irrespective of their nationality.
Student’s accommodation in Italy is managed by the university office for international students. It is advisable for students to secure accommodation through this office, primarily because private housing companies can be a bit expensive. Changes in accommodation fees will often depend on the location of residence.
Transportation, Food and other Fees
Public transportation is the convenient way for students to move around in Italy, with a regular ticket starting at €1.50. Eating at a restaurant can be a bit expensive compared to cooking at home. Students are also expected to incur additional cost of books, learning supplies and phone bills.
More policy change is expected to be introduced in 2017 to enhance the welfare of students as well announcing Italy Education system on the world Stage.
