– What Has Changed?

The Sri Lankan education system has one distinct feature. Education in the country is accessible to everyone, regardless of social status or background. As a result, Sri Lanka has one of the highest literacy rates in all South East Asia. The unique geographical location of Sri Lanka makes it an ideal destination for international students from neighbouring countries such as the Maldives, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

Comparing the World University rankings in 2016 and 2017, Sri Lankan universities have experienced significant change, as some universities have climbed. The University of Peradeniya, University of Ruhuna and Rajara moved up from 2,361, 4,318 and 9,132 places in 2016 to 2,248, 2,927 and 4,433 in 2017 respectively.

University education in Sri Lanka is not expensive compared to other countries. There is also a programme called “Twinning” in Sri Lanka that allows students to combine their university education with universities in Australia, the UK or US. This is achieved by completing a year in Sri Lanka while the other two or three years are completed in these countries.

  • Private Inѕtіtutеѕ which оffеr degrees in affiliation wіth Foreign Unіvеrѕіtіеѕ
  • Prоfеѕѕіоnаl Inѕtіtutеѕ.


Visa application In Sri Lanka

As a foreign student, it is compulsory to apply for a residence visa under the student category, and you will need to obtain this visa before entering Sri Lanka.

Cost of Living

Comparing the Cost of Living for Students in 2016 and 2017, the difference is not too different. Generally, the cost of living in Sri Lanka is low compared to same European Countries, though the countries are being faced with economic crisis, yet the cost of living is favourable.

Tuition fees

As well as affordable living costs, tuition fees in Sri Lanka are also quite low. The government supports both citizens and international students with grants and scholarships to ease the financial burden for those hoping to study. Tuition fees do vary depending on the university.  On a tight budget? Sri Lanka is a place for you, transportation in Sri Lanka is very affordable, and with $20 you can move from one island to the other.

While Sri Lanka has many positives, the current economic crisis as a result of long civil war still has a detrimental impact on the education system.
