Being A Student In Mexico: 2016 vs 2017
– What Has Changed?
Mexico is the tenth most visited country in the world, and it is a perfect destination for students hoping to secure a degree qualification. Mexican higher education has witnessed tremendous growth over the years, particularly between 1971 to 2000; total enrollment increased more than six-fold. From 290,000 to 1,962,000, rising to 3.6 million in 2016. These figures are set to increase in 2017. However, with the recent economic crisis due to fall in oil prices and production, the Mexican government has introduced some budget cuts which hit the education sector.
The budget cuts started in 2015 with the funds assigned to education being cut by P$1.6 billion in 2017 budget compared to 2016 budget. This move by the government is having a direct impact on the educational sector, resulting in a number of strikes in 2017.
Although Mexico is a thriving tourist destination, security is an area of concern. In 2014, reports surfaced that 43 students from the Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers’ college were kidnapped and killed. This sparked local and international outrage on the security of students in Mexico. September 26, 2016, marks the second year of the kidnap incident, from 2014 till presently that is 2017 there has not been any clear information about the incident. The security issue has been a great threat to the growth of Mexico, as well as a big concern for both citizens and international students who aspire to study in one of the Mexican universities.
