Being A Student In Angola: 2016 vs 2017 – What Has Changed?
The end of the civil war in Angola resulted in a significant increase in students accessing higher education. Current figures estimate that there are over 140,000 students now in education. However, the MPLA Vice President and Defence Minister, General Joao Lourenco stated that education should not be a tool to simply educate the masses. The focus should be on quality rather than quantity. The Vice President emphasised the need for higher quality academic institutions and stated that achievements should be recognised and rewarded.
However, this statement on achievement came as a surprise for many when it had not been high on the list of priorities under the government’s regime. Furthermore, statistics showed that 58% of the current intake of students were admitted to university in 2016 with failing grades. Consequently, it was argued that they were not suitably prepared for university study and the students faced significant difficulty in making the transition into higher education.
The general consensus at the present time is that current educational standards in Angolan universities are simply too low and they are not based on achievement. Although education aims to bring about stability to the country, there are still questions to be answered about future educational provision in 2017 and beyond.
